Warner Music and Udio Collaborate on AI Music Platform
Warner Music Group (WMG) and AI music startup Udio have reached a settlement in their copyright infringement lawsuit, according to a recent press release. This marks the beginning of a new partnership. Both companies will now work together on a licensed AI music creation service, slated for launch in 2026.
WMG’s press release details how this “next-generation music creation, listening, and discovery platform” will leverage generative AI models. The models will be trained using authorized and licensed music.
The platform aims to unlock new revenue streams for both artists and songwriters, with the focus on protecting their work. Users can anticipate a subscription service that enables them to create remixes, covers, and original songs. They can use the voices of participating artists and the compositions of contributing songwriters. Warner Music Group emphasizes that the platform will appropriately credit and compensate all artists and songwriters involved.
Statements from Leadership
WMG CEO Robert Kyncl stated in the press release, “We’re unwaveringly committed to the protection of the rights of our artists and songwriters, and Udio has taken meaningful steps to ensure that the music on its service will be authorized and licensed. This collaboration aligns with our broader efforts to responsibly unlock AI’s potential – fueling new creative and commercial possibilities while continuing to deliver innovative experiences for fans.”
WMG’s roster includes popular artists such as Lady Gaga, Coldplay, The Weeknd, and Sabrina Carpenter.
Udio co-founder and CEO Andrew Sanchez also commented in the press release: “This partnership is a crucial step towards realizing a future in which technology amplifies creativity and unlocks new opportunities for artists and songwriters. Our new platform will enable experiences where fans can create alongside their favorite artists and make extraordinary music in an environment that offers artists control and connection.”
Industry Context and Future Implications
The settlement signals a shift in the music industry’s perspective on AI. Last year, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment initiated copyright infringement lawsuits against Udio and its competitor, Suno. Both platforms empower users to generate songs using AI text prompts.
Reportedly, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment are also engaged in licensing discussions with Udio and Suno.
Suno’s Recent Funding Round
Adding to the momentum around AI music technology, Suno announced a $250 million Series C round, achieving a $2.45 billion post-money valuation. Menlo Ventures led the round, with participation from NVentures, Nvidia’s venture arm, Hallwood Media, Lightspeed, and Matrix.
