Google Maps Gets Smarter: Gemini Tips & EV Updates
Google Maps is enhancing user experience with new features designed to save time and improve preparedness. A key addition is the Gemini-powered “know before you go” tool. According to Google’s official blog, these updates also include an improved Explore tab and a predictive feature for EV charger availability, as described in Google’s announcement.
“Know Before You Go” Tips with Gemini
When you search for places like restaurants or hotels, Google Maps now provides a “know before you go” tips section. This surfaces valuable information such as the best ways to book reservations, hints about secret menu items, and optimal parking spots. You can click each tip for more detailed insights.
This feature is currently rolling out in the U.S. on both Android and iOS platforms.
Enhanced Explore Tab
Google has streamlined the Explore tab to improve the discovery of trending spots nearby. By swiping up, users can now find popular restaurants, activities, and sights, such as newly opened cafes or local art galleries.
Google highlights that finding curated lists from sources like Viator, Lonely Planet, and OpenTable is easier, in addition to accessing recommendations from local influencers.
The updated Explore tab is being released globally on Android and iOS this month.
EV Charger Availability Predictions
For EV drivers, Google Maps will now show how many chargers are likely to be available upon arrival. Google utilizes AI to analyze both historical and real-time charger data to generate these predictions. Look for the “EV chargers” option within Maps to use the feature.
The EV charger availability predictions will begin rolling out next week on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in.
Anonymous Reviews
Google is also enabling users to leave reviews under a nickname, offering options like “Eager Elf” or “Julia Loves Sweets.” These reviews remain linked to a Google Account, ensuring that users can only leave one review per business to prevent review bombing.
This announcement follows Google Maps’ recent integration of Gemini, enhancing navigation and hands-free use by allowing users to ask about points of interest along their route, access information like sports or news, and manage tasks such as adding events to their calendar.
